A leader’s belief
system would have been formed throughout their lives by their reaction to
various influences on them. These influences may include; their families, their
friends, their cultural heritage/background, their physical and social
environment, their education, the kind of media broadcast they have been
exposed to, their associates, their religious affiliation etc. Absolutely,
their philosophy comes from the idea they have been exposed to.
It is no doubt that
some of the belief systems a leader may have been exposed to maybe false. But
these beliefs will only become imprinted into their personal philosophy if they
accept it to be true, and these beliefs forms the foundation on which they
build their lives. This is the more reason why a person needs to first of all
change his philosophy about himself before he can experience any positive
change in his new belief system.
Un-arguably, the
environment in which we have been raised have formed in us a negative thinking
due to some of the flawed philosophies that have been negatively impacted on us
by our various cultural background which we
ardor. A good leader of character with the intentions of making a
positive difference to the world, need to thoroughly scrutinize every belief
system we have received and what belief and attitudes we may need to alter.
A leader’s personal
philosophy about himself and the human race will un-avoidable be revealed some
way in his public policy. The public policy of a leader will definitely
reflects how he views, interact with and the lives he affect as he carries out
his leadership role.
American great leader
once said – “if you want to test a man’s character, give him power”(Abraham
Lincoln). The way in which any leader utilizes the power given to him/her will
definitely reveal his/her character. It is worthy to note that our philosophy
controls the path along which we are traveling in life.
It is not what we say,
but what we sincerely believe that directs our lives and our leadership. No leader
possess character from something external of him. The basic foundation of a
character is established when a leader clings on to an idea so dearly that it
becomes a deep principles worthy of sacrifice.
Again, character is
weighed based on the depth of what we pro-claim to believe. Learning the basic
skills attached to leadership styles and method leads to nothing if we lack
real conviction and protect our lives.
