“Whoever
drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I
shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him become in
him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”—John 4: 13-14
Jesus sat by the well,
the eastern sun burning against his skin. He could feel a soft wind brush his
furrowed brow. His disciples had gone to a neighboring village to get more
supplies for their journey. He sat quietly, observing the goings on around him.
One or two people interrupted His thoughts with polite greetings of “Shalom”. A
few others called him Rabbi. He did not seem to be in haste.
Soon, a woman sashayed
to the well, her empty water pot balanced on her head, humming a tune to
herself. He noticed how the other women looked at her with disdain. He noticed
how the men frowned at her, but their eyes held that needy glint. He did not
utter a word. She approached the well and dropped the fetcher in.
Just then the Lord
spoke up: “Woman, give me to drink.”
You just have to pay
attention to the narrative. Jesus was a Jew; a highly esteemed Jew at that. The
person He spoke with was a Samaritan. As if that was not bad enough, she was a
woman! You have to understand the culture at that time. Jews had no dealings
with the Samaritans. They neither did business nor talked with them. But, here
was Jesus sitting at a well, talking with a Samaritan woman. You see, his
actions were so counter culture that the woman had to express her shock! He
pushed past the age long divide to do something extraordinary.
We must be grateful
that we have a God who will break barriers to reach us. We must be glad that
our king is not too high up there to relate with us. We should be grateful that
our God is not impatient and erratic. We should be glad that we serve a God who
can wait for us; a God who will not lower His standards but will lower Himself
to reach out to us.
Jesus responds was mind
boggling; “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is
who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink, you would have asked Him, and He would have
given you living water.”
It is possible that in
our haste we have walked past our miracle? Has God sent you a miracle at your
place of work, your home or even church and you did not recognize it? What
Jesus told her in essence was, “Everything you have ever longed for is right
here in front of you. Everything you have hoped for has been waiting for you
right here.”
When the Lord told us
miracles await us this month and always, did you take it literally? Did you
look out for the miracles? Are you expectant? Don’t be like Jacob who slept in
the very presence of the Lord and did not even know it. Is it possible that
what you are waiting for is actually waiting for you?
While Isaac pondered
about the lamb for the sacrifice, God had a ram entangled in the thickest, held
fast by the horns until Abraham and Isaac arrived.
“The Abraham
lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thickest
by it’s horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt
offering instead of his son”—Genesis 22: 13
Don’t kill the gift God
gave in place of the miracle He has provided!
You will experience
more miracles if you keep your eyes on the Lord. If you are expectant of the
supernatural, you will enjoy the supernatural.
Adam woke up into
provision. He did not have to toil to feed and be productive. The miracle of
paradise was waiting for him. The Israelite woke up one morning to find manna
waiting for them. Miracles await you!
Jesus identified a need
in the woman’s life and made her see that He was there with the answers she
sought. He was the miracle she so desperately needed. He was the one she sought
when she questioned whether it was better to worship on hills or in temples.
She had a vacuum nothing else could fill. Not the five husband, or the man she
was living with who wasn’t really her husband.
Jesus told her that if
she drank the water He provided, she would never thirst again.
You have to realize
that every time you awake in the morning, there is a miracle waiting for you.
Jesus is right there! He is right there with more than you could ever request
for. He is right there with everything provided for you in the Covenant of
Abraham ratified by the blood of Jesus. He is right there when things seem to
go wrong. He is waiting with answers to the questions of life. He is waiting
for you to let go of the temporary things you have held on to for so long. He
is waiting with lasting solutions.
There are more miracles
around you than you can exhaust. The Lord Himself is waiting: waiting for you
to see you reach for Him.
Did you notice that the
woman dropped her water pot after she met with Jesus? She did not leave with
the agenda she came to the well with. She left her former support system to
embrace the miracle of Jesus! When you begin to enjoy the supernatural, you
will lose taste for the mundane. You will see that what God ahs in store for
you is way beyond what you may have planned for yourself.
Miracles await you!
Blessings!
