The encounter between
prophet Elijah and the widow of zarephath is a touching story. She stared the
last meal she had with the prophet of God, which was just enough to keep
herself and her son alive. Prophet Elijah was amazed by the show of faith the
widow displayed and this prompt the prophet of God to proclaim blessings of
prosperity upon her (I king 17: 14). The widow never lacked anything throughout
the period of the famine. The little meal she had, multiplied substantially.
The widow was brave to
recognize that true prosperity comes only from God. She put her faith in action
by sharing all she had with the prophet of God and received her miracle.
The study of the Bible
reveals that the kings and government of that days weren’t held responsible for
the prosperity of the people. The prophet of God were the ones responsible, for
they were seen as God’s representatives. Seeking help from political leaders
and government officials to help stabilize the economy of the nation will not
result to any positive change because we are calling on the wrong set of
people. The real source of power to get wealth is from God Almighty and not
with the kings and government officials.
Another interesting
scenario that occurred in the Bible, a certain woman cried out for help to the
king as there was a dry famine in the land. And the king reply… “If the Lord do
not help thee, how can I help thee?” ( 2 King 6:27). It was obvious that the
king could not do anything to change the devastating economy of the country as
at that time without God’s help.
Let us all come to the
realization that our heavenly father wants each and every one of us to prosper
and he has sent his servants/pastors to bless us.
Therefore, when the
land is faced with famine, we should stop looking up to government and their
officials to help us, rather we should look unto God.
