“So teach us
to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”—Psalm 90:12
Once we agree that we
are not the product of a cosmic accident, and that our planet and lives are not
a freak event of nature, then we must be deliberate about the way we live our
lives. We cannot afford to spend our lives roaming the earth without direction
or a mission. We can’t waste our days wishing and hoping that we could do
something. We must take time out to find out the true purpose of our lives and
do all we can to live up to that purpose.
“So teach us
to number our days…..”
Powerful! Numbering our
days means to live deliberately, by design or purposefully. We cannot afford to
live life haphazardly, nor can we carry on as if we know how to number out days
on our own. If we did not create ourselves, and if we did not send ourselves to
the earth, it is only wise to return to our creator to ask the pertinent
questions of life. God knows how you should number or allot your days. God has
the Master plan for your life. Living with this consciousness helps you to pace
yourself and to amend the parameters with which you measure your life. You will
not try to compete with anyone else. You would realize that you are in sync
with God’s timetable for your life and would never try to outrun Him or lag
behind. You would embrace the lessons of the moment in preparation for the life
ahead of you. You would acquire the right skills and character training for
your anticipated next level. Since God knows where you should be at every stage
of your life, He is the only one that can teach you to number your days.
It is also important
that you number your days because you only have so much time. If Jesus tarries,
you will not be here in another hundred years. Your time here will be done and
there will be an end to the contributions you can make. You will not be able to
do what you didn’t do or undo what you did. Now is the time to number your days
and give them purpose. Now is the time to ensure that you live your life to its
fullest. It doesn’t matter how gifted you are and how powerful your potentials
are, if you do not have time they will not be deployed and the world will not
enjoy the goodness God put in you.
Jesus knew he didn’t
have too much time on earth, and he maximized it to the fullest extent. He
spent the first thirty years preparing himself, studying the people and
imbibing their culture. Within three and half years, He set about radically
affecting the world with the love of God and the message of the Kingdom. He
achieved within thirty three years what many people will not achieve in eighty
years because He numbered His days aright.
“we must
quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is
coming, and then no one can work.” John 9:4
His mindset was clear;
“I have only so much time and I must complete what I was sent here to do! If
you take time to number your days, you will find that you do not have time to
hate people, envy others or gossip. If you number your days, you will find that
you cannot afford life to play Russia roulette with your life and take
decisions that will affect your destiny without counsel and direction from the
Lord.
“……. that we
may apply…”
The Psalmist goes ahead
to explain why we should number our days. After God has taught you how to lay
out your life’s plan and how to live life to the fullest, it is up to you to
apply what you have learnt. When the chips are down, it is up to you to apply
what you have learnt. God will teach you but you must apply what you learn. God
will give you instructions and direction but you must apply your heart to
wisdom by yourself. To apply tells us that we must be active. It is time to get
in the driver’s seat of your life. You can’t let life decide for you. You can’t
just wait to see where life will take you. You can’t watch things happen. You
must apply yourself. You must be proactive about your life.
“….our
hearts…..”
Have you seen people
live without a “heart”? they are cold and calculated. When you see a shoddy
job, you know that the doer’s heart was not in it. When you see a half- hearted
job, you know that the doer did not put his all into it. This kind of people live
life without passion. Everything about them is dull and lifeless. They live
without zest and excitement. There is no bounce to their walk, no spring in
their feet and no fire in their eyes. They may apply their skills but because
their heart is not in it, what they do lacks that fire that inspires. Because
they do not turn the heat up, people around them cannot catch the fire they are
supposed to spread.
“….to
wisdom..”
Wisdom is the accurate
or correct application of knowledge. When it is all said and done, we are
supposed to apply our hearts to wisdom. Does wisdom mean anything to you? Does
it guide your decisions? Do or will your actions pass the wisdom test? When you
walk in wisdom you attract favour with God and men. David behaved himself with
wisdom and the people of Israel honored him, and God was with him. (1 Samuel
18:5, 14) When you apply your heart to wisdom, you set yourself up for a
spectacularly extraordinary life.
The days ahead are
filled with promise of greatness. Don’t waste them. Live wisely. Apply your
heart to wisdom.
Blessings!
