The horse is
made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD. “Proverb 21: 31”
If you are going to en joy
the full benefits of the covenant, you must understand the workings of the
Covenant. The word “Covenant” is
from the Greek word “Diatheke”.
Diatheke is a picture of two people playing tennis. Have you watched two
seasoned lawn tennis players at play? The scene is exciting. The ball goes back
and forth as the players slam it across the court with such dexterity that
makes you want to watch the match over and over again. Even though tennis is a
game and usually a competition, it would not be any fun if only one person
played it. No matter how seasoned and experience the player is, he would not be
able to sustain a game.
The covenant you have
with God is not a game. This is serious. God shows how serious He takes it when
He swears by Himself:
For when God
made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore
by Himself, saying; Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will
multiply you. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
For men indeed swear by the greater, and an oath for confirmation is for them
an end of all dispute. Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the
hiers of promise the immutability of His counsel, confirmed it by an oath, that
by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we might
have strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold of the hope set
before us. “Hebrew 16: 13-18”
What the Lord literally
did was to say that if He failed in His part of the covenant, He would cease to
be God! Wow! That’s far reaching. Abraham knew beyond the shadow of a doubt
that God could not lie. But then, the promise would not have come to pass if
Abraham depended solely on God playing His part whilst Abraham ignored his. You
see, Abraham had a role to play too. Abraham had to believe God. He had to take
steps that showed that he believed God. Beyond believing that God had done it,
Abraham had to have intercourse with his wife, the thought of which made Serah
laugh since they were both old and worn.
Therefore
Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I have grown old, shall I have
pleasure, my lord being old also?
“Genesis 18: 12”
Abraham had to have
intercourse with his wife! Think about it. God promised Abraham a son, but
after the promise was made, Abraham had to take the step of faith by sleeping
with his wife. Or at least attempting to. As he made the move, God supplied the
strength and the body that was as good as dead sprang to life for the purpose
of implanting Sarah with the seed of Life!
What part of the
Covenant are you trying to enforce in your life? Healing? Prosperity?
Salvation? Protection? There is always a part you must play. Any philosophy or
theosophy that teaches you that everything depends on God alone is unbiblical.
God designed Covenant as a collaborative venture. If you would just do your
part, you will be amazed at what God will do. Many times, when people say they
are waiting for God, God is actually waiting for them.
Let’s examine the life
of David. Davis’s life was the stuff from which legends are made. At a tender
age, he confronted a giant that soldiers ran from. From David’s retort to
Goliath, you would find that David was a Covenant Collaborator, not Covenant
spectator.
Then David
said to the Philistine, you come to me with a sword, with a spear and with a
javeline. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the
armies of isreal, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into
my hand and I strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give
the carcasses of the camp of the Philistine to the birds of the air and the
wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is God in
isreal. Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with
sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our
hands
“1 Samuel 17:45-47”
David had a slingshot
in his hands but he knew it was the Lord that will deliver Goliath to him.
David did not come out with the mentality that God would kill Goliath, cut of
his head and hand it over to him. Even years later as a General, David would
inquire of the Lord before going to war. He knew it was his duty to prepare for
the day of battle. He also knew victory could only come from the Lord.
You cannot run your
business on prayers alone. Neither can you run your business on principles of
excellence only. You have to combine the two. Are you on the cutting edge of
your game? Have you learnt all that is available about your field? Can you hold
an engaging conversation about what you do? Do the best people in your career
think you have solutions and answers? This is one part. On the other hand, have
you involved God in all you do? Have you allowed Him to guide and direct your
actions? Do you just make decisions without asking God’s guidance? Anyone who
operates one without the other will get only limited success. Anyone who
operates in excellence and allow god into everything he does will shock the
world.
You don’t want to do
this on your own. Whether it is raising a family, building a business or
leading a nation, if you will collaborate with God, you will find success
beyond your wildest dreams.
Are you a Covenant
Collaborator? It is time to step it up.
You will have help. You
will do well.
